Mar 26, 2020 (newstodate): Today marks the first all-cargo flight by SAS as one more airline to seek ways to utilize the capacity of the grounded passenger aircraft fleet.
According to SAS Cargo's Head of Communications, an SAS Airbus A330-300 aircraft will lift off from Stockholm Airport to Chicago, in the USA, carrying some 30 tonnes of cargo in the belly compartment, while no cargo will be stowed in the passenger compartment as is now seen in similar operations by other airlines.
-This is so far a one-off operation for Scan Global Logistics that undertakes the full commercial obligations, while SAS Cargo delivers the aircraft and the flight operation. No SAS Cargo sales are involved, says Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, SAS Cargo Head of Communications.
-No similar operations are currently being planned, but we will consider requests case by case if there is a demand in the market, says Ms Kaoukji.
Last time SAS was offering an all-cargo service was back in 1998, when SAS Cargo launched a cargo flight between Gothenburg and New York operated with an Atlas Air Boeing 747-200F freighter, but the service was closed again after a short period of time.
