Mar 02, 2020 (newstodate): The Icelandic ACMI carrier Air Atlanta Icelandic has now taken the first steps into its future with a twin-engined aircraft fleet.
According to Icelandic media, the carrier has thus inked an agreement with GECAS for long-term lease of five Boeing 777-300 and Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
Air Atlanta will take delivery of the first Airbus A330-200 aircraft in May, and in June the company will receive the first Boeing 777 aircraft.
In January 2020, the company entrusted the Dutch recruitment agency Confair with the task of sourcing a batch of Boeing 777 first officers to be based in Saudi Arabia.
Already operating 33 Boeing 777 aircraft, Saudia is a steady costumer at Air Atlanta Icelandic that currently operates seven Boeing 747-400 aircraft for the carrier, and Air Atlanta has now secured a new three-years aircraft wet-lease contract with Saudia.
In the fleet of Air Atlanta Icelandic today are seven Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft and seven Boeing 747-400 freighters.
The Boeing 747 has so far been the work-horse of Air Atlanta that may still add more aircraft of this type is warranted by the market - but the course has been set for turning towards a more fuel-efficient twin-engine fleet.
-We are heading towards an era with twin-engine aircraft, and we are certainly not excluding any Airbus alternative. We are fully capable of operating more than one aircraft type. The Boeing/Airbus alternatives have different characteristics and all options remain open, Baldvin Mar Hermannsson, Air Atlanta CEO, told newstodate in early February 2020.
