Mar 27, 2020 (newstodate): Icelandair is closely watching the market for air cargo opportunities as the airline reduces its capacity by some 30 percent.
The airline remains online with flights from Iceland to the open airports in the USA, including Boston, New York JFK, Newark, Washington, Seattle and Chicago, as well as destinations in Canada.
And while passenger load factors are declining, capacity is instead utilized for carriage of belly-hold air cargo.
-We have a very high rate of utilization of freight capacity on the passenger flights as there are not many passengers flying right now, says Gunnar Mar Sigurfinsson, Icelandair Cargo Managing Director.
-We have actually been loading up to 10 tonnes on the narrow-body Boeing 757-200 aircraft, and up to 25 tonnes on the wide-body Boeing 767 aircraft. That is unusual of course, but one can say nothing is unusual these days.
-We may add freighter flights to destinations as needed, and we are exploring all possibilities. But at this point in time we have not made any decision on flying with freight out of any other markets than usually served.
-If that will change we will see. But we are of course open for any business that makes sense for us and our customers, says Mr Sigurfinsson.
