Mar 11, 2020 (newstodate): The Romanian carrier Tarom is rapidly building its fleet of new ATR aircraft.
On March 10, 2020, the Danish aircraft lessor Nordic Aviation Capital delivered three new ATR 72-600 to Tarom of a series of nine aircraft under the lease agreement signed between the two parties in June 2019.
The first aircraft was delivery only on February 19, 2020, as proof of a fast track-delivery scheme to replace the carrier's existing fleet of seven ageing ATR 42.
Tarom is planning for a major fleet rejuvenation to refresh the aircraft stock currently comprising also four Airbus A318, four Boeing 737-300,four Boeing 737-700, and two ATR 72-500 aircraft.
At the same time, Tarom left 2019 with alarmingly empty pockets requiring immediate action to keep it in the air.
In an effort to save the carrier's life, the Romanian government in January 2020 approved a capital injection into Tarom as a loan to be transformed into restructuring aid, subject to approval by the European Commission.
EU has now approved the transaction while requiring Tarom, 97 percent owned by the Romanian state, to come up with a restructuring plan.
