Feb 11, 2020 (newstodate): The Faroe Islands is expecting a sustained rise in passenger volumes through Vagar Airport.
-The existing airport terminal is designed for a maximum of 400,000 passengers annually, which has already been exceeded as we handled a total of 424,281 passengers in 2019 after growing by 12.3 percent, says Regin Jakobsen, Vagar Airport CEO.
-Our estimate is some 6-700,000 passengers in 2015, and over 80,000 passengers by 2030. This year, we expect an increase in volumes by eight percent, 7.2 percent in 2021 and a less steep growth in the years thereafter.
-With growing hotel capacity and an increase in air traffic I would however expect an increase over eight percent this year, so there is absolutely an imminent need for future expansion of the terminal capacity.
-COWI is currently working on a master plan for the development of Vagar Airport, and a first version is expected to be delivered already before the end of this month. After this, the material will be scrutinized before a final version can be presented in, say, two or three months.
-Even so, the crux will be sourcing the investments needed for the construction works that will require large commitments, says Mr Jakobsen.
