Feb 26, 2020 (newstodate): The turbulence around the ownership of Ukraine's only civil and military engine manufacturing company, Motor Sich continues.
From 2015, a number of shares were acquired by offshore companies registered in Panama, the Virgin Islands, Cyprus and Saint Kitts and Nevis - but eventually the main beneficiary of the transactions proved to be a Chinese citizen, owner of Beijing Skyrizon Aviation Industry Investment Co., Ltd., and the Xinway Group.
Despite vehement protests from the Ukrainian government, the majority stake in Motor Sich ended in Chinese hands.
This spurred strong protests from the USA over fears that China would gain access to crucial know-how of military engine production through Motor Sic.
As the issue might cause US trade sanctions, the Ukrainian government is now expected to rule against the sale of Motor Sich to the Chinese investors - and the company may thus return to Ukrainian state ownership, as was the case until 2014 when the company run into severe problems after the abrogation of cooperation and partnership with the Russian aviation industry.
