Feb 26, 2020 (newstodate): SAS is continuing with plans for a future production unit to provide the airline with a fleet of mid sized aircraft servicing regional routes.
-Approximately 20 percent of the network is served with our current mid sized Airbus A319 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Serving regional routes with aircraft of the right size is important from both sustainability and financial perspectives. However, these aircraft will need to be replaced in the next few years, a SAS release on November 2019 – January 2020 quarterly results reads.
-Before proceeding, there are several prerequisites that need to be fulfilled before a new order can become a reality. Firstly, we must ensure that each entity within our operating model is based on single-type fleet in order to minimize cost and complexity. Secondly, we need to have crew agreements tailored for regional operations in Scandinavia. Thirdly, we need to be able to select and source proven aircraft types suitable for reliable operations in Northern Europe.
So far, SAS has concluded an agreement with the Danish union, FPU, tailored for future regional production.
As SAS is going all-in for an all-Airbus aircraft fleet, the Airbus A220-300 aircraft might be a perfect choice for SAS that is now already reaping its first experience with the aircraft type as airBaltic is operating two aircraft on a wet-lease contract with SAS.
airBaltic is reportedly planning to firm up options into orders for another batch of 30 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, while the Danish aircraft leasing company Nordic Aviation Capital has placed orders for 20 aircraft.
So there is a pool of Airbus A220-300 aircraft for future lease available in the market.
