Feb 28, 2020 (newstodate): By the end of week 8, February 17-23, 2020, figures from Seafood Norway show volumes exported to China down 83 percent, y-o-y, to a mere 100 tonnes, while exports during the first eight weeks are now down 48 percent to 2,051 tonnes.
As for exports of salmon to South Korea, volumes in week 8 were actually up four percent to 509 tonnes, while growing only 1.6 percent in weeks 1-8, indicating that this market is also close to the tipping point - and with the latest reported growing spread of the virus a decline is looming.
Exports of Norwegian salmon to Japan accrued to 267 tones in week 8, down nine percent, while volumes during weeks 1-8 were also down four percent to 2,350 tonnes.
All markets counted together, Norway's exports of fresh salmon was down 9.4 percent, y-o-y, to 15,553 tonnes in week 8, and down six percent in weeks 1-8, to 121, 646 tonnes.
"One thing is the effect from the spread of coronavirus on Norway's salmon exports to China. But if the effect spreads to markets as South Korea and Japan, it is going to be really tough", a senior seafood logistics expert told newstodate a few week ago.
