Feb 28, 2020 (newstodate): Lithuania's Siauliai Airport is to see a major upgrading of its infrastructure.
Siauliai Municipality has signed a contract with the Lithuanian construction company Panevezio Kelai comprising a range of infrastructure projects to be completed already before the end of this year.
Siauliai Airport will have a new taxiway connecting the runway to the future apron, the apron will be renovated, a new airfield lighting system will be implemented, and other pertinent infrastructure will be established connecting the airport and Siauliai Free Economic Zone and the industrial park.
The works will improve the operational conditions for handling of more and larger commercial airlines.
The airport is also increasingly being targeted as a coming new MRO centre, with the launch already in 2020 of a new aircraft maintenance facility, Aviatic MRO with a total area covering 23,000 sq m to provide maintenance services for Airbus A320, Boeing 737 Classic and Boeing 737 NG aircraft, including D-checks, management of assets and parking.
Also looming on the horizon is another MRO provider, Israel Aerospace Industries, Israel's largest manufacturer of aerospace equipment that has aired interest in the potentials of Siauliai Airport.
Owned and operated jointly by Lithuania's Ministry of Defence and Siauliai Municipality, Siauliai Airport does not belong to the State Enterprise Lithuanian Airports managing the airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.
A former Soviet air base, Siauliai Airport with a 3,500m CAT 1 runway and a second 3,280m runway is today also a key air base serving the NATO air forces supporting the monitoring of the Baltic air space.
