Feb 07, 2020 (newstodate): In January 2020, Finnair lifted a total of 12,661 tonnes of cargo - an increase by 5.6 percent, y-o-y.
Not surprisingly, this was marked by the traditional drop in demand during the Chinese New Year that started in the last week of the month.
Together with a general bleak trend in the Asian cargo market, volumes on the Asian lanes actually dropped 1.3 percent, y-o-y, to 8,822 tonnes, while volumes on the European traffic increased by 21.4 percent to 2,841 tonnes.
The North Atlantic traffic saw volumes up by 47.1 percent to a total of 958 tonnes, while domestic cargo with only 41 tonnes was down 27 percent.
Over-all load factors were down as available capacity outgrew demand in the market.
January thus proved a cautious opening of the new year, with little comfort to be expected in February where the effects from the Chinese New Year were further aggravated by the outbreak of the Coronavirus in China leading to a stop of traffic on most of the carrier's Asian lanes.
