Feb 10, 2020 (newstodate): Helsinki Airport is a key gateway in Northern Europe for flights to China - and the current outbreak of coronavirus has a deep impact on the traffic.
Already in the schedule for summer 2020 are 53 weekly flights to destinations in Greater China, with Finnair performing 42 weekly flights to seven destinations - Beijing Airport, Beijing Daxing Airport, Shanghai, Xian, Nanjing and Guangzhou, as well as Hong Kong.
-Finnair is following the Coronavirus situation closely. We have cancelled our mainland China flights for the period February 6-29, totalling altogether some 200 flights, and this naturally affects also our cargo customers, says Fredrik Wildtgrube, Finnair Cargo Head of Global Sales.
-Our strategy for China remains unchanged – China is a key market for Finnair, both for passenger and cargo traffic, and we look forward to returning to serving our customers when it is again possible.
-We naturally continue to keep close contact with our customers to understand how the situation impacts their needs and the demand for our services, says Mr Wildtgrube.
Together with a general bleak trend in the Asian cargo market, Finnair Cargo's volumes on the Asian lanes actually dropped 1.3 percent, y-o-y, to 8,822 tonnes, which was also affected by the start of the Chinese New Year by late January 2020.
