Dec 03, 2020 (newstodate): As Air Greenland is reining in on flights between Greenland and Denmark around Christmas due to Covid-19 restrictions, the issue of air cargo is high on the agenda.
As one solution, the Icelandic carrier Air Iceland Connect from November 5, 2020, launched a weekly flight from Reykjavik Airport to Kulusuk on Greenland's east coast, continuing to Nuuk on the west coast and returning from Nuuk directly to Reykjavik.
The service has its focus on air cargo including mail from Denmark to Greenland and on passenger transportation from Nuuk to Iceland with the carrier's fleet comprising two Bombardier Q400 and three Q200 aircraft.
And in November 2020 the Icelandic carrier Norlandair landed a contract with Greenland's government for scheduled flights between the two countries.
Under the contract, Norlandair will operate two weekly flights between Iceland and Nerlerit Inaat/Scoresbysund.
The contract will run for six years, with options for another four-years extension, and services will be provided with a mix of DHC-6 Twin Otter, B200 King Air, and Dash-8 aircraft according to concrete market demands and conditions.
In total, the contract comprises 104 flights per year, of which 24 flights will operate from Reykjavik and 80 flights from Akureyri.
