Dec 18, 2020 (newstodate): Till now an all-SAAB aircraft operator, the Estonian carrier Nyxair has added a new aircraft type to its AOC: an ATR 42.
The aircraft delivered last month will be introduced from December 21, 2020, on the PSO route between Tallinn and the Baltic Sea island Saaremaa, ending a prolonged battle over disputed tender results and political rifts.
Already in 2019, the tender was won by Nyxair, replacing Transaviabaltika using a Jetstream 32 aircraft, while the new PSO contract envisaged a larger aircraft offering at least 50 seats.
Poised to win the tender was therefore Nordica that would be serving the route with an ATR 72 aircraft offering 72 seats.
This came, however, at a higher price that envisaged in the tender conditions.
According to the conditions of the public procurement, a tenderer's liabilities could not exceed the value of its assets, and calculations thus meant that Nordica would face a deficit of euro 2.4 million.
Transaviabaltika was therefore declared winner of the tender.
But Nordica appealed the decision to the Public Procurement Review Committee - won the case and the PSO contract.
The process, however, did not stop there: the Estonian Road Administration decided to annul the tender and to open a new one with other specifications.
And this time Nyxair again emerged as the winner...
