Dec 16, 2020 (newstodate): Icelandair will have only 71 pilots left after the coming dismissal of 68 pilots by the turn of this year.
The strongly reduced pilot corps will suffice to man the limited fleet of two to five aircraft still operating the airline's sharply reduced network by the start of 2021, excluding however the crews on Icelandair Cargo's two Boeing 757-200 freighter aircraft.
In summer 2019, Icelandair employed 562 pilots, and expectations earlier announced are that up to 30 aircraft will be operating in the Summer 2021 schedule including three Boeing 737 MAX deliveries from April 2021 adding to the existing fleet of six already delivered - but still grounded.
If the summer 2021 plans are realized, Icelandair will soon have to call back the bulk of the pilots so far on the bench.
However, it all depends on whether - or when - the market will recover after the current resurgence of Covid-19.
