Dec 10, 2020 (newstodate): Air traffic between Greenland and Denmark is severely affected by the corona pandemic.
While passenger traffic is at low ebbs with drastic cuts in Air Greenland's traffic program around Christmas, the need for air cargo from Denmark remains a crucial issue.
Air Greenland has thus decided to operate three weekly rotations between Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord and Copenhagen Airport primarily to fulfill its obligations to customers in the cargo community.
However, due to the decline in demand in the passenger marked, the carrier has cut a number of flights before the turn of the year coordinated to cause only limited disturbance to the cargo market.
Also crucial to the provision of air cargo services, the Icelandic carrier Air Iceland Connect from November 5, 2020, launched a weekly flight from Reykjavik Airport to Kulusuk on Greenland's east coast, continuing to Nuuk on the west coast and returning from Nuuk directly to Reykjavik.
The service has its focus on air cargo including mail from Denmark to Greenland and on passenger transportation from Nuuk to Iceland with the carrier's fleet comprising two Bombardier Q400 and three Q200 aircraft.
And in November 2020 the Icelandic carrier Norlandair landed a contract with Greenland's government for scheduled flights between the two countries.
Under the contract, Norlandair will operate two weekly flights between Iceland and Nerlerit Inaat/Scoresbysund.
