Dec 01, 2020 (newstodate): The Danish Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with Air Greenland to provide SAR services for the coming 20 years.
The current contract, also held by Air Greenland, expires by the end of this year, and Air Greenland is thus ready to continue the SAR service from January 1, 2021, with two Airbus H225 Super Puma All Weather helicopters based at Kangerlussuaq and one Bell 212 in Narsarsuaq, due to be replaced by a new Airbus H155 helicopter in 2021.
Already in 2011, Air Greenland placed an order for the two EC225 Super Puma Helicopters slated for delivery in 2014.
These aircraft were acquired in expectation of a future boom in oil and gas in the Arctic region - but as these hopes receded Air Greenland cancelled the order again in 2014.
Air Greenland phased out six of its eight S-61 helicopters from commercial service by December 31, 2012, keeping only the remaining two aircraft for SAR mission at high maintenance and operational costs - and only one aircraft is today operating.
