Nov 03, 2020 (newstodate): The world's first - and so far only - Airbus A380 to hit the aftermarket is now moving closer to its last landing.
The Portuguese aircraft leasing and ACMI company HiFly placed the order for an ex-Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 aircraft in September 2017, and took delivery of the aircraft in July 2018 becoming thus the first charter carrier to operate the aircraft type.
Now, HiFly has decided that the market for the aircraft has disappeared with the coronavirus pandemic, and the decision has been made not to extend the current three-year lease contract as it expires.
Instead, HiFly will focus on expanding its fleet of currently three Airbus A330 and two Airbus A340-300 aircraft.
Manufactured in 2006, the carrier's Airbus A380 is placed with HiFly's subsidiary HiFly Malta that operates an all-Airbus fleet of 15 aircraft.
Among HiFly's customers for ad-hoc charter operations has been Norwegian, substituting for Norwegian's Boeing 787 on the route between London and New York on several occasions.
