Nov 26, 2020 (newstodate): Cargo volumes keep going rather stable at Latvia's Riga Airport in 2020, while mail volumes are vacillating.
According to October statistics from Riga Airport showing an over-all drop by 9.5 percent, y-o-y, a total of 2,133 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled, including 1,332 tonnes of cargo and 801 tonnes of mail, bringing the January-October volumes to a total of 18,144 tonnes - down 18.3 percent, y-o-y.
Despite the decline in volumes in 2020, Riga Airport remains adamant on its future with air cargo.
A new specialized 95,000 sq m cargo handling apron at Riga Airport was officially commissioned on October 16, 2020, directly connected to the area dedicated by Riga Airport to the development of a coming cargo city air cargo service and logistics center.
In 2021, DHL will start operating a new regional parcel handling complex in the area, and further down the line plans are to develop a multi-functional 9,000 sq m cargo logistics center in cooperation with investors.
Riga Airport is currently served by seven cargo airlines including Atlas Air, Atran Airlines, Eleron and RAF Avia, as well as integrators Fedex, UPS and DHL.
