Nov 10, 2020 (newstodate): The Norwegian government's refusal to grant further financial support to the country's ailing low-cost carrier Norwegian adds further nails to the coffin.
As an immediate response, Norwegian has announced the dismissal of a further 1,600 employees leaving the company with only 600 active staff, while 15 of its 21 aircraft will be grounded again.
Norwegian now pins its hopes for survival on servicing 12 domestic routes with the remaining six aircraft, pending allocation of more state-subventioned domestic flights.
As Norway earlier divested of its stake in the Scandinavian carrier SAS, the government's decision not to support Norwegian effectively deprives the country of any home-based intercontinental traffic leaving the market free to be served by foreign airlines as they seem profitable, and with schedules matching their own needs and interests.
