Nov 17, 2020 (newstodate): A new airport in Kazakhstan is opening for traffic in December 2020.
Located at Turkestan, the country's major spiritual and cultural center, construction of Turkestan International Airport began in May 2019 by the Turkish YDA Group under a public-private-partnership model.
From the start, Kazakh airlines plan to operate flights to the country’s biggest cities of Nur-Sultan and Almaty and later to other regions, while Turkish Airlines will launch flights on a route from Istanbul.
As the country's 12th airport, the new airport will join Kazakhstan's open skies aviation regime, in effect since November 2019, removing restrictions on a number of flights and providing fifth-freedom rights to foreign airlines.
The airport with a design capacity of handling three mio pax annually, has been built with a 3,300 m runway capable of handling large aircraft.
