Nov 25, 2020 (newstodate): The Icelandic carrier Norlandair has landed a contract with Greenland's government for scheduled flights between the two countries.
Under the contract, Norlandair will operate two weekly flights between Iceland and Nerlerit Inaat/Scoresbysund.
The contract will run for six years, with options for another four-years extension, and services will be provided with a mix of DHC-6 Twin Otter, B200 King Air, and Dash-8 aircraft according to concrete market demands and conditions.
In total, the contract comprises 104 flights per year, of which 24 flights will operate from Reykjavik and 80 flights from Akureyri.
For years, Norlandair, since October 2011 owned 25 percent by Air Greenland, has been operating two weekly flights from Akureyri, while the coming flights from Reykjavik are new on the schedule.
The airport capable of serving only STOL and rotary wing aircraft was built in 1985 by the US oil company ARCO in connection with oil exploration in Jameson Land and sold to Greenland in 1990.
