Nov 24, 2020 (newstodate): If Icelandair exercised all its purchase rights and options for Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, the fleet would eventually end up comprising up to 24 aircraft.
The carrier placed its order for eight Boeing 737 MAX 8 and four MAX 9 aircraft in February 2013, also signing up for future options comprising a further 12 aircraft.
Icelandair started operating its first three Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in 2018, and delivery of six more was planned for 2019, seven Boeing 737 MAX aircraft would be added in 2020 and 2021, bringing the fleet to a total of 16 of this type.
This all came to a halt as the Boeing 737 MAX was grounded 20 months ago, leaving Icelandair with six aircraft delivered and stuck on long-term parking.
Three aircraft will be delivered in Spring 2021 with three more to come in 2022 - but it remains uncertain if Icelandair will exercise its right to cancel the delivery of the last four aircraft on firm orders.
