Nov 11, 2020 (newstodate): Originally conceived in the role as a freighter alongside its passenger version, the Airbus A380 has now entered the all-cargo business as well.
Emirates SkyCargo has started operating its Airbus A380 passenger aircraft on select cargo charter operations to transport urgently required cargo across its network.
The first dedicated Emirates A380 all-cargo operation successfully transported medical supplies between Seoul and Amsterdam via Dubai, lifting 50 tonnes of belly-hold cargo on the flight.
Emirates SkyCargo is planning for more all-cargo flights in November and is now also working on further optimizing the capacity of its Airbus A380 aircraft through measures such as seat loading of cargo.
With 114 aircraft in the fleet, Emirates is the largest operator of the Airbus A380 aircraft with eight aircraft still on the order book - but at the same time the carrier has now decommissioned one A380 that is sent for scrap and part-out at the Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees Airport in France.
Till June 2004, the A380 pure-freighter program had fetched a total of 17 orders, including two for Emirates, five for IFLC, and 10 for FedEx - but all orders were cancelled and the program shelved.
