Nov 23, 2020 (newstodate): Poland is planning for construction of a new green-field mega airport, Centralny Port Kommunikacyjny - Central Communication Port - to be located approximately 45 km Southwest of Warsaw, and replacing Warsaw Chopin Airport from 2027.
The new airport will have two runways and be designed to handling of up to 45 million passengers per year in the first phase, with capacity to grow to 100 million passengers.
The Polish government has now opened a tender for the master plan of the airport, and so far one Austrian, a French-Spanish consortium and the Dutch NACO have signed up for participation.
The government expects a contract to be signed already before the end of this year, with the master plan ready and approved in 2022 when the ground-breaking ceremony will also take place, and all constructions works would then be completed in 2027, allowing for operating the new airport and shutting down Warsaw Chopin Airport that grew its passenger volumes by 6.2 percent in 2019, reaching a total of 18.9 mio passengers - and thus close to the ceiling at 20 mio passengers per year.
Since July 2015, the airport handling approximately 40 percent of the country's total air passenger traffic is managed by the State Enterprise Polish Airports owned and managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development.
