Oct 15, 2020 (newstodate): Wizz Air is now offering wide-body cargo capacity from Budapest Airport.
On October 13, 2020, the low-cost carrier took delivery of one ex-Qatar Airways A330-200F freighter capable of lifting 70 tonnes of payload on flights up to 7,400 km.
In September 2020, the Hungarian government decided to invest in the acquisition of own cargo uplift capacity to secure strategic capacity in times of crisis and emergencies, avoiding capacity fluctuations and price instability in stressful times like the current Covid-19 pandemic.
The government has signed a contract with Wizz Air to take on the operation of the aircraft that is new in the airline's fleet but sharing cross-type commonality with its 131 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, allowing its pilots to qualify for flying the aircraft.
Besides securing the state's own capacity to carry emergency and humanitarian loads, the freighter's unused or excess cargo capacity will be marketed to commercial customers on industrial terms.
