Oct 09, 2020 (newstodate): IATA expects the coming Covid-19 virus vaccination program to become the largest air logistics operation ever, estimated to requiring the equivalent uplift capacity of 8,000 Boeing 747-size freighter aircraft.
Facing this challenge, stakeholders in the industry are now working hard on preparing for the massive time- and temperature-sensitive operation to distribute vaccine shipments to the global marketplace from production sites yet to emerge as certified and fully-tested vaccines are released.
One player intent on securing a stake in the run is Worldwide Flight Services that has launched its Project Coldstream to prepare for the massive logistics efforts.
The infrastructure of WFS to cope with the coming challenge builds on its currently 12 dedicated pharma facilities in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Johannesburg, London, Madrid, Miami, New York JFK and Paris CDG, all IATA CEIV certified, or certified or complying with GDP, Good Distribution Practice, standards.
Integrated within WFS Denmark since August 1, 2019, and officially opened on September 3, 2019, WFS' pharma facility at Copenhagen Airport has the capacity of providing temperature-controlled end-to-end handling of 300 pallets and 30 PMCs in the 2-8 degrees range, in addition to the capacity of providing temperature-controlled handling space in the 15-25 degrees range at other parts of the cargo terminals.
In addition, WFS Denmark has launched a project to expand its pharma handling capacity at Copenhagen Airport in response to increasing volumes of temperature-sensitive shipments from the Scandinavian pharma industries, handled by WFS Denmark at the airport.
The expanded facilities are reportedly to be commissioned by 2022.
