Oct 13, 2020 (newstodate): The current Covid-19 pandemic has clipped the wings of Ukraine International Airline's long-haul visions.
On one hand, the market has collapsed, and on the other hand the airline's fleet of wide-body aircraft to serve long-haul routes has dwindled.
In 2018, the airline's fleet comprised three Boeing 777-200ER and four Boeing 767-300ER aircraft operating direct flights from Kiev to New York, Toronto, Delhi, Bangkok and Beijing.
In 2019, two Boeing 767-300ER aircraft were phased out, while the carrier suspended services on its route to Beijing and Bangkok to rein in costs.
In March 2020, UIA ferried two Boeing 777-200ER aircraft for storage in Spain, later canceling the contract with the lessor, leaving the airline with only three long-haul aircraft - one Boeing 777-200ER and two Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
On top of this, the Boeing 777-200ER has been grounded since the end of 2019 due to an engine out of service, leaving UIA with only the two aging Boeing 767-300ER aircraft once the current lockdowns and curfews are lifted.
