Oct 27, 2020 (newstodate): Swissport Finland has lost its key customer at Helsinki Airport: Finnair.
Finnair was Swissport's launch customer at Helsinki Airport when it entered the Finnish market from December 1, 2011, offering baggage and apron services under a five-year contract, later extended, with the airline.
Following a tender process, Finnair has inked an agreement with Aviator Finland and Finavia's ground handling company Airpro on ground handling services at Helsinki Airport from March 31, 2021, as the contract with Swissport expires.
Already in August 2020 and currently employing some 1,400 people, Swissport Finland opened talks with unions over reductions in workforce comprising up to 700 staff should it fail to win a renewal of the cooperation with Finnair.
With effect from June 1, 2019, Swissport took over the management of the Finnair COOL Terminal, placed within a separate business unit that will however not be affected by the downsizing of the handling company's activities at Helsinki Airport.
