Oct 20, 2020 (newstodate): In September 2020, Norway's Oslo Airport saw its total passenger volumes down by 78.4 percent, y-o-y, to 574,574 passengers.
However, the country's domestic air services still proved comparatively resilient, down more moderately by 59.5 percent to 446,057 passengers.
The strength of Norway's domestic air travel market has caught the attention of airlines besides Norwegian and SAS that have so far competed on the route network.
Wizz Air has thus announced its plan for entering the domestic market by setting up a hub at Oslo Airport to compete with the existing providers of domestic flights in Norway, starting out with flights already from November 5, 2020, on routes from Oslo to Bergen, Trondheim and Tromso.
The entrant promises flight at rock-bottom prices on the new routes that are considered to be only the first on the domestic network.
Also to seek a bite of the cake is a new yet-unnamed airline project under formation, aiming at launch of services on domestic routes from H1, 2021, with an initial fleet of five Boeing 737-800 or Airbus A320 aircraft.
