Oct 05, 2020 (newstodate): Iceland's Keflavik Airport will not see Ukraine International Airlines on the tarmac this winter as earlier expected.
The carrier had planned to return flights on the route between Kiev and New York FFK via a refueling stop at Keflavik Airport with the first flight on the route to be served twice-weekly on December 9, 2020.
Citing low demand from the start, UIA planned to use a Boeing 737-900ER aircraft on a flight scheduled for 12.5 hours in the air - a performance beyond the capacity of the narrow-body aircraft requiring an en-route stop at Keflavik Airport.
However, the sustained negative effect from the coronavirus makes the plan unsustainable, and UIA will instead delay the start of the Transatlantic flights till April 1, 2021, with wide-body capacity allowing for direct nonstop flights.
