Jan 06, 2020 (newstodate): In 2019, Norway's exports of salmon to the Chinese market almost doubled in volumes, compared to the preceding year.
A total of 23,264 tonnes of fresh salmon was thus destined for China during the year, an increase by 94 percent, y-o-y.
While an impressive growth, in early 2017 the Norwegian Seafood Council said that China's total full-year import of Norwegian salmon might rise to 42,000 tonnes already in 2017, and other Norwegian estimates were that the export to China might reach 70,000 tonnes by 2020 - which has still to be seen.
In 2018, Norway's exports of fresh salmon to the Chinese marked also increased significantly - albeit still to modest levels, compared to the pre-Nobel Prize crisis years.
In 2018, the direct export to China in 2018 thus totalled 11,995 tonnes against a mere 3,288 tonnes in 2017, while much export did find its way to the Chinese market through a Vietnamese backdoor, closed by the middle of the year.
