Jan 27, 2020 (newstodate): As predicted, Iceland's Keflavik Airport did see traffic significantly down in 2019, after the demise of WOW Air and Icelandair's troubles with the MAX fleet grounding.
A total of 7,247,820 passengers were handled at the airport which is a decline by 11.7 percent, y-o-y, with volumes in December 2029 alone down 20.4 percent.
Aircraft movements at the airport were also down by 11.7 percent, totalling 97,432 - again with a drop by 20.4 percent in December alone.
Cargo and mail fared equally badly with a drop in volumes by 7.9 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 59,263 tonnes, while volumes in December performed slightly better with a decrease by 5.1 percent, to a total of 4,840 tonnes.
Looking ahead, plans by two projects to take over after the demise of WOW Air are still very much in doubt, while one sign of progress is 2020 is provided by Juneyao Airlines that plans to launch the first-ever flights connecting Iceland and Shanghai, China, via Helsinki from summer 2020, with maybe even a second Chinese carrier, Tianjin Airlines to follow suit with a connection, yet unconfirmed, to Beijing.
