Jan 30, 2020 (newstodate): Commercial airlines are now free to return flights through Iranian airspace after the temporary closure since January 11, 2020, in the aftermath of the downing of a Ukrainian Airlines aircraft.
At a meeting on January 28 of EASA's Integrated EU Aviation Security Risk Assessment Group, the airspace over Iraq was also cleared for commercial aircraft overflights, halted since January 8, 2020.
Two corridors over Iraq are, however, still closed for commercial overflights, and flights through Iranian airspace below 25,000 feet are still advised against by EASA.
Much of the traffic in the airspace concerned is performed by the region's airlines including Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways, but other international airlines including Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and China Airlines have also avoided routing their aircraft over Iran or Iraq due to the regional tensions.
