Jan 20, 2020 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic carried a record-high number of passengers in 2019: five million.
With an increase by 22 percent, y-o-y, this was the so far largest volume of passengers in the airline's history.
In 2019, airBaltic operated a total of 62,748 flights, an increase by 12 percent, y-o-y, with a load factor at 76 percent.
But while little statistics are released concerning the airline's cargo performance in 2019, airBaltic saw sustained growth in this segment as well.
-2019 turned out to be highly successful for airBaltic's Cargo Department. In total, we carried 21 percent more cargo and mail compared to 2018, which is the steepest year-on-year increase of cargo/mail tonnage seen in the last decade, says Ilja Seliverstovs, airBaltic Head of Cargo.
-Both cargo and mail were showing similar growth rates and, cargo-wise, the most popular route in our network in 2019 was Riga-Moscow.
-The growth in carried volumes was a serious test for cargo and ground handling companies in our main base, Riga International Airport, but despite the pressure induced by the substantial volume increase, the set operational KPI targets were also met.
-In 2020, airBaltic will launch 14 new destinations, including direct flights from Riga to Yerevan, Yekaterinburg, Manchester among others. The ongoing sustainable growth path of the company gives us a continued positive future outlook, says Mr Seliverstovs.
