Sep 18, 2019 (newstodate): The issue of construction of a third runway at London Heathrow Airport has been debated for years - and a decision is still pending.
Major opponents of the plan are environmentalists as well as British Airways/AIG that controls over half of the slots at the airport and is not exactly welcoming to competitors expanding with a new infrastructure in place.
One airline pushing for a third runway is Virgin Atlantic that has now revealed its plans for adding 84 new destinations in the UK, Europe, and worldwide if/when a third runway would open at Heathrow Airport, turning the carrier into a new global player after serving only 19 long-haul routes today.
Among new destinations to be opened would be flights by Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow to Copenhagen, Stockholm Arlanda, Oslo, Helsinki and Gothenburg.
Currently, the completion of a third runway at LHR is tentatively slated for 2026.
