Sep 16, 2019 (newstodate): Without much noise, Azerbaijan airlines is pulling out from its route between Baku and New York with the last flight by the end of September.
With much fanfare, the route was opened on September 23, 2014, after years of preparation and following the upgrading by the US FAA of Azerbaijan to Category I on March 7, 2014.
The operation was boosted by Azerbaijan Airlines' orders for Boeing 787 aircraft as the first airline in the CIS to place orders for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and in 2016 USA and Azerbaijan signed an Open Skies agreement to liberalize air traffic between the two countries.
