Sep 20, 2019 (newstodate): Lithuania's state-owned company Lietuvos Oro Uostai, Lithuanian Airports takes a two-pronged approach to the country's future airport infrastructure.
Plans are firmed up for the sustained development of the country's three airports at Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, while visions for a future fourth airport is already on the table.
To secure the continued development, an interim investment program running till 2028 has been set up aiming at the development of a united and integrated transport infrastructure in Lithuania, coordinated with the construction of the European railway line Rail Baltica.
The reconstruction of Vilnius Airport's passenger terminal will be completed, and the reconstruction of the arrival terminal will also be completed by 2028.
A new passenger terminal is planned for Kaunas Airport, integrated with the Rail Baltica railway line. Kaunas Airport is to further develop its existing aircraft MRO businesses, as well as boosting the airfreight activities.
The infrastructure of Palanga Airport will also be modernized, and the runway will be refurbished.
But besides the expansion of the existing network, preparations for possible construction of a new airport is also under consideration as all three airports have already exceeded their design capacity.
A new airport would be located between Vilnius and Kaunas, equipped with a 3,200-3,500m runway to accommodate handling of large aircraft.
A final decision on the new airport is expected in 2022, with construction to start in 2025-2026 and to be completed by 2030-2035.
