Sep 06, 2019 (newstodate): As the country's leading international airport, Oslo Airport will have up to 20 weekly all-freighter operations per week in the service of the country's large seafood export industry.
However, transportation of live and fresh seafood products from north to south requires up to two days of trucking to reach Oslo Airport, taking a heavy toll on shelf life, and during the years several attempts to set up direct freighter services from airports closer to the main production sites in the north of the country have been made - with no lasting success.
Now, at least two fresh projects are on the table for cargo uplift.
At Bodo Airport, plans are fast progressing for setting up a new freighter service with "a renowned cargo carrier" to lift seafood into the North American and Asian markets, and an announcement on start of services and other details is awaited within the coming few weeks.
Also in Northern Norway, another project driven by Pole Position Logistics for start of a freighter service from Eveness Airport to China has again been postponed due to difficulties in sourcing GSE as well as contractual challenges concerning terminal facilities, and the project will not materialize in 2019, as earlier envisaged.
Avinor is watching the developments to establish alternatives to Oslo Airport in the country's seafood air logistics.
-Avinor is generally positive towards initiatives enhancing the access to freighter uplift capacity for Norwegian seafood at all our airports, says Martin Langaas, Avinor Director Traffic Development & Cargo.
-Outside Oslo Airport, such freighter operations are however rather complicated due to a range of issues to be overcome, primarily related to the concrete infrastructure of the individual airports, says Mr Langaas.
Three airports in Northern Norway with runways at 2,800 m and 45 m width, - at Eveness, Bodo and Lakselv - are potentially capable of handling large aircraft including Boeing 747/Boeing 777 freighters, provided the pertinent infrastructure is upgraded to allow for certification of scheduled flight operations with wide-body aircraft without weight and other restrictions.
