Sep 19, 2019 (newstodate): Now it's a fact: Greenland's Kangerlussuaq Airport will remain operational, also after the commissioning of new airports in the country by 2023.
The fate of Kangerlussuaq Airport has long been in the balance as it is not part of the Grand Masterplan for the country's airport infrastructure.
An agreement has now been inked between the governments of Denmark and Greenland to the effect that the airport will remain in service with the Danish Ministry of Defence to fund the operation.
To secure the future of Kangerlussuaq in the longer term will require massive maintenance and reconstruction works on the airport's runway that is impacted by changes in the permafrost conditions causing cracks in the runway surface.
