Sep 19, 2019 (newstodate): So far, the Airbus A220-300, formerly Bombardier CS300, aircraft has been an undisputed success.
But now some problems have been detected, leading to a demand for additional inspections.
Latvia's airBaltic was first to put the new aircraft into commercial operation, but was also first to experience problems with two incidents of leakage of Pratt & Whitney turbofan engine lubrication systems leading to an in-flight drop in oil pressure, and on one occasion the aircraft had to return shortly after take-off.
Later, a similar problem was registered during a Swiss flight leading to an engine shut-down, but in all three cases landings were performed without mishaps.
Still, the US Federal Aviation Administration is now considering mandatory inspections of Airbus A220 engines.
A total of 83 A220 aircraft have so far been manufactured, with Swiss operating 29, Delta Air Lines 22, and airBaltic 19 aircraft
