Aug 21, 2019 (newstodate): Georgia's Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development has now confirmed that an agreement will be signed today with the low-cost carrier Ryanair.
Rumours of imminent opening by Ryanair of flights to Georgia have been around for a decade, but in May 2019 George Chogovadze, Georgian Airports Association Director General, revealed that negotiations with Ryanair were almost completed, and an agreement would be finalized in the near future.
With the new agreement inked, Georgia will see the launch of Ryanair flights from European airports to Tbilisi and Kutaisi.
Already in 2010, Georgia's former minister of Economy and Sustainable Development said in a TV interview that Ryanair would come to Georgia from summer 2011, and similar statements have been several times since then while no action has been seen.
However, the first European LCC to enter the Georgian market was the Hungarian LCC WIZZ Air that launched its first flight into Georgia on October 29, 2012, on the route between Kiev and Kutaisi.
WIZZ Air since opened its base at Kutaisi Airport on September 23, 2016, with one aircraft, adding a second aircraft at the airport on May 17, 2018, and a third from May 2019.
WIZZ Air is now operating flights from 27 European destinations to Kutaisi Airport.
