Aug 26, 2019 (newstodate): Reports of new projects for setting up seafood freighter services from airports in Northern Norway are continuously surfacing.
Latest newcomer is a project for a China-bound freighter service from Bodo Airport, managed by Avinor.
Working on the plans is Flybyen, an agency set up by Bodo Commune to spur the development of aviation business in the region, and supporting the project are reportedly several major seafood exporters in the region.
Speaking to newstodate in May 2018, Bodo Airport's Manager, Ove Hofstad, said that three major issues would have to be settled to support the opening of operations with large cargo aircraft at Bodo: special apron facilities, fueling capacity and GSE.
Now at least the issue of pertinent GSE has been solved with the acquisition of a main deck loader delivered last week at the airport, warranting progress for future cargo handling.
According to Norwegian media, FlyByen is in talks with a major cargo carrier.
With the existing restrictions as to Sibir overflight rights, a future cargo carrier with traffic from Bodo to a Chinese destination would probably be a Russian or a Chinese carrier, rather than a European airline.
Also in Northern Norway, a project driven by Pole Position Logistics for start of a freighter service from Eveness Airport to China has again been delayed for a prolonged period due to a number of reasons including difficulties in sourcing GSE as well as contractual challenges concerning terminal facilities, with no new target date announced.
