Aug 15, 2019 (newstodate): Since 2012, Japan Air Lines has been operating seasonal charter flights to Iceland. This year only one flight has been scheduled.
The carrier will arrive from Tokyo at Keflavik Airport on August 31, bringing Japanese tourists for a week's exploration of the Icelandic attractions.
The flight will leave Keflavik empty and come back one week later with empty seats as earlier attempts to sell the capacity in the Icelandic market proved in vain.
Already in September 2005, meetings between the Japanese foreign minister and his Icelandic colleague visiting Japan with a business delegation aired the intention to open up for direct air services, while talks also comprised working out an air services agreement "within a few years".
In January 2019, a delegation from Iceland comprising representatives from Iceland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport and Municipal Affairs as well as airlines Icelandair and the cargo ACMI carrier Air Atlanta met in Tokyo with representatives of the Japanese authorities.
On the agenda were issues of mutual interest in developing scheduled passenger and cargo services between the two markets.
Agreement was reached on conditions for opening of scheduled air services as well as charter flights, and the two parties agreed on working on a new air services agreement.
