Jul 04, 2019 (newstodate): A group of Icelandic and other investors are still mulling plans for setting up a new airline venture - but now excluding Keflavik as a hub.
The plans were first vented by Hreidar Hermannsson, owner of Stracta Hotels Group and a travel bureau, Stracta Travel and were originally envisaged as a low-cost long-haul carrier to operate out of Iceland.
The plans have now been revised..
-The plans are not on ice, but still it is clear that a low-fare airline can not be operated from Iceland due to high costs at the Keflavik International Airport, says Bjorn Larusson, spokesman for Mr Hermannsson.
-We have notified interested parties that we will be in contact as soon as we start serious preparation and planning, perhaps this autumn.
-Until then, we are just in informal discussion and gathering information about the markets and potential countries for launch of operations.
-We Icelanders have learned from the bankruptcy of WOW Air and will not step in the same pit.
-However, the former owner of WOW Air is not connected in any way to Mr Hermannsson's plans, and they have never been in contact - not even before the bankruptcy, says Mr Larusson.
