Jul 29, 2019 (newstodate): Finnair is adjusting its China schedules during the coming winter program by relegating the route from Helsinki to Chongqing from year-round to summer flights only.
Services on the route will thus be suspended with the last flight on October 23, 2019, to be resumed only from the start of the Summer 2020 schedule.
As the first European airline to fly directly non-stop to Chongqing - one of China's largest cities when counting the population in the municipality as well the large adjoining administrative areas together - Finnair launched flights from Helsinki to Chongqing on May 9, 2012, with four weekly Airbus A340 rotations.
The decision to reduce flights to Chongqing is driven by low demand on the route during the winter period, but Finnair is also straining its capacity after the agreement between Finland and China to increase the quota of weekly flights from Helsinki to Beijing from currently seven to 14 weekly operations including flights into both of Beijing's airports.
The carrier is now operating 38 weekly flights from Helsinki to six destinations in China - Beijing since June 2, 1988, Shanghai since September 2003, Chongqing since May 9, 2012, Xian since June 14, 2013, Nanjing since May 13, 2018, and Guangzhou from September 2, 2005, as well as to Hong Kong since May 19, 2007.
