Jun 04, 2019 (newstodate): If localizing Russian airports has so far been a challenge to your geographical knowledge, the situation has now gone from bad to worse.
The Russian president has signed a decree on assigning the names of statesmen, scientists, writers, singers, artists and aviation representatives to 44 international airports in Russia.
Moscow Vnukovo Airport is thus now named after the Soviet aircraft designer Andrei Tupolev, Moscow Domodedovo Airport has taken on the name of the Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, while Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport has taken on the name of the writer Alexander Pushkin.
The process of suggesting new names for the Russian airports has been driven by the Russian Geographical Society, the Russian Historical Society, the Russian Language Society and the Russian Military Historical Society, while the actual naming was decided by public vote.
Airport codes will remain unchanged, however.
