Jun 27, 2019 (newstodate): Not surprisingly, considering the harsh sanctions imposed on the country, Iran's Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport notes a drop in passenger and cargo traffic in its latest fiscal year ending March 20, 2019.
The airport handled a total of 7.27 million passengers and 141,704 tonnes of cargo, which was down 19 and 14 percent, y-o-y, respectively.
47,446 takeoffs and landings at the airport were also down by 19 percent, compared to the preceding year.
The airport's Salaam Terminal capable of handling five million passengers annually was officially opened on June 22, 2019, boosting the airport's handling capacity by 80 percent, and plans are already on the table for construction of a second new terminal, Iranshahr Terminal with a planned capacity of handling 25 million passengers per year in its first construction phase and slated to be commissioned within five years.
Undaunted by the current strains, plans are to turn the airport into the region's #1 hub in cargo and the second-biggest hub in air passenger transportation.
