Jun 18, 2019 (newstodate): Chinese media now reveal plans by Sichuan Airlines to start operations to Finland before the end of this year.
The airline is building a new route network named Sichuan Airlines Panda Road route network, rapidly turning Chengdu Airport into the country's 4th largest international hub, with the opening of flights on a new route to Rome to be launched on June 22, 2019, marking Sichuan Airline's 13th European destination from Chengdu.
Since December 10, 2018, Sichuan Airlines is already online at Copenhagen Airport with two weekly flights from Chengdu with Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
Plans for a direct air link between Chengdu and Helsinki have long been in the air and were so far supposed to be offered by the Chinese low-cost carrier Lucky Air.
Already in 2017, the HNA Group subsidiary Lucky Air applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China for a licence to open a route from Kunming via Chengdu to Helsinki.
The application was approved for flights to commence with two weekly rotations from January 17, 2018, using Airbus A330-300 aircraft - but the airline did not exert the rights.
