Jun 25, 2019 (newstodate): Georgia is seeing an unprecedented hike in the influx of tourists and number of airlines calling at its airports.
Russia has so far been a booming market for Georgian tourism - but this has come to an at least temporary halt.
In response to large-scale demonstrations in Tbilisi on June 20, 2019, triggered by a speech by a Russian parliamentarian in the Georgian Parliament, Russia's omnipotent president has issued a decree banning passenger flights between Russia and Georgia.
Flights by the Georgian carriers Georgian Airways and MyWay Airlines are thus now banned from Russian air space and may only be allowed back after a thorough safety audit by Russian authorities.
The president also recommends that Russian carriers stop charter and scheduled flights to Georgian destinations, leaving an estimated 150,000 Russians to reconsider their holiday plans in summer 2019.
