Jun 28, 2019 (newstodate): While still not officially announced by the carrier, LOT seems to be in an advanced phase in talks with South Korea over start of services to Seoul.
In his Twitter account, Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto announced on June 21, that "Budapest-Seoul direct air link will be established by LOT Polish Airlines. Negotiations are in the final stage."
If realized, this would be the third long-haul route by LOT outside its Polish homeland after the opening of flights from Hungary's Budapest Airport to New York on May 4, 2018, offering four weekly year-around Boeing 787-8 services, followed by the opening of flights from Budapest to Chicago from May 5, 2018, with two weekly rotations on the route.
Budapest Airport lost its Transatlantic routes as the former Hungarian national carrier Malev folded its wings by the end of 2011 after 66 years of continuous operation under the pressure by the EU Commission to repay what was ruled illegal state subsidies.
Pending a decision on the future of Warsaw Chopin Airport, LOT has found other ways to secure room for expansion including establishing Budapest, in Hungary, as a new hub for its Transatlantic and other intercontinental flights.
